Teaching English As A Foreign Language

Learn how to teach English as a foreign language online and gain an accredited TESOL certificate; your passport to the world.

Action Volunteer Alliance is proud to announce a partnership with Global English: specialists in online TEFL/TESOL provision since 1996. Global English are now helping AVA volunteers acquire the skills they need to teach English so they can travel, live and contribute meaningfully abroad.

2 courses are offered which will help you get started in your classroom:

The Level 1 TESOL course (70 hours)

The Level 1 TESOL course for teaching young learners (95 hours)

I found the course very interesting and satisfying to do. Some of the questions were quite challenging, but this just added to the sense of achievement on completion of the course.

Pamela Ranson, UK

Who Are These Courses For?

The Level 1 TESOL course (70 hours) is for AVA volunteers who wish to start teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Whether you are completely new to teaching or are already a teacher and wish to learn more about TESOL methods, this course is designed to be of practical use to you in the classroom.

The Level 1 TESOL course for teaching young learners (95 hours) adds on key specialist study areas and material for teaching from Kindergarten through to Teenagers, in a wide variety of settings.

Both courses lead to the accredited Preliminary Certificate of TESOL Distance Education Courses, awarded by (ACTDEC - the Accrediting Council for TESOL Distance Education Courses). The 95 hour course also adds on a special Teaching English to Young Learners Certificate from Global English.

All Global English tutors are highly qualified TESOL teachers with international experience and are on hand to offer help or advice during your course.

Course enrollees should either have a degree in any subject or university level entrance qualifications ('A' levels or equivalent). But consideration is also given to mature applicants who possess significant life experience e.g. in teaching, business, languages or with young people. Global English welcomes applicants whose first language is not English. However, non-native English speakers should possess a high level of written and spoken English and/or English language qualifications, such as C.A.E. or C.P.E. or IELTS.

I felt very much guided along and well supported by my tutor. Her comments were down to the point and I appreciated it a lot. I think I took quite a few things on board and changed some of my lessons since I started the course. The reaction of my students has been positive.

Barbara Stucky, Switzerland

Course Contents

Both courses are divided into 4 modules and include the specialist CD-Rom 'Train to Teach English'. The 70 hour course looks at teaching English both to young learners and adults, with an emphasis on helping you in practical ways in your classroom. So you'll cover the practical elements of teaching, like classroom management (group work and pair work, discipline, correction and classroom sensitivity) as well as the key theory needed for teaching the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. There are comprehensive sections on English Grammar and unlimited tutorial support as you progress.

The 95 hour young learner course adds on specific YL material, including sections on: Young learner characteristics, managing your resources, specialist sections on teaching English to Kindergarten, Primary and teenagers, classroom management and motivating your young learners. There is also an excellent section on teaching English with minimal resources, ideal if you are traveling to a country where you won't have ready access to resources and materials.

I found this course challenging and interesting with special emphasis on lesson planning and analysis which has been beneficial to me. The tutor's remarks were detailed and informative and greatly appreciated. The fact that I was able to think and plan the answers without being pressured through a time limit enabled me to prepare my answers fully.

Angela Almeida, Portugal

Grading and Assessment

The course is graded by continuous assessment. There are short tasks and in-depth activities throughout the course with an exam question at the end of module 4. Your tutor will mark your answers and is available if you require any further help. Your final award is based on your performance across all 4 modules and upon successful completion you'll gain a recognised ACTDEC certificate.

The TEYL course with G E has changed my attitudes towards the learners. I would like to recommend this course to other English language teachers, formally trained or not. It is an Eldorado in the field of English language teaching.

Nde Florent, Cameroon

Course Duration

Most AVA trainees work their way through their chosen course in around 2-4 months, although you set the pace of your studies. 6 months is the maximum duration, but this is extendable, if required, for a small extra fee. And as with all Global English courses, you can complete as quickly as you wish, so completion inside a month is possible.

First class course which I really enjoyed, and now feel much more prepared for my teaching project in India.

David James, India
