Orphanage

This is a very rewarding program but can also be emotionally challenging. In this program you will have the option of living in the orphanage with the children or living in a home stay close to the orphanage you are placed in.

You will basically be acting as a big sister or brother to the children in the orphanage. You will help them get ready for school in the mornings, help with homework and play with them when they get home. You may help with cleaning and cooking and other day to day practices.

To join the Orphanage program you will be asked to provide a police record, due to the fact that you will be working so close with children. There is no age restriction but you have to be a mature individual and be capable of helping take care of children. Anyone under the age of 18 must have parental consent. There are no time restrictions on this program.

Volunteer Feedback: I loved just being with the children, taking them to school and helping them in whatever they needed. To form such a bond with the children so quicly was extremely beneficial for both myself and the children. I got particularly close to the youngest child, Muna, who was unfortunately sick when I was there which made it even harder to leave her. Katherine, UK

Teaching English

In this program you will be placed in a local school to teach Nepali children to speak, read and write English. You do not need any formal training for this program. We can place you in a school with text books or in a school with little info structure depending on what you personally are looking for. This is a very challenging program with amazing rewards. You will stay with a local family who lives close to your school during this program.

The schools do not have much for you to work with. You will basically be teaching in a bare room with only a chalk board. We recommend you bring along any teaching supplies you feel will help. Large book stores have a great selection of teaching supplies including Q cards and short stories with related questions placed on cards for convenient travel. It is greatly appreciated if you are able to leave any teaching supplies at your school.

To join the English teaching program, English must be your first language and you must be available for a minimum of 1 month. Due to the fact that you will be working with children you will be asked to provide a police record and be at least 18 years of age.

Before venturing to Nepal to teach English, you may choose to take a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) course through Global English. AVA and Global English have formed a partnership and we now offer a 5% discount on these courses. For more information on Global English please look here. http://www.actionvolunteeralliance.com/tesolcourse.htm

Volunteer Feedback: I want to thank you for support on my travels to Nepal for volunteering. The experience has been one to long remember. I have found AVA very informative and helpful in making sure I would get the best possible experience and comfort whilst volunteering in Nepal. I didn't know what to expect by coming here, but found your tireless help and assistance most reassuring. Every question or concern I had (which were many) AVA gladly helped me out with and went to great lengths in providing health information and other general FAQ that I was curious about. I am very grateful for all your help and interest in my fist experience of the eventful land of Nepal! Travis, Australia

Health Post

This program is geared towards anyone who has some experience in health. You will be working in a community health post. This is not a hospital. It is for local people who have common health problems. You will treat people with the flu, minor cuts and burns, giving tetanus shots and dealing other non-life threatening problems. You will stay with a local host family in this program.

You will also give seminars to local schools and orphanages about good hygiene, health and nutrition. If you are comfortable and have the knowledge, you may be asked to help informally educate the other staff at the health post as well.

The health posts do not have a lot of resources so if you have any information which might help with seminars do not hesitate to bring it with you. You may also want to bring such things as clean disposable rubber gloves or gauze. These things are sometimes available at the health posts but not always. Many of these places will wash and reuse such things.

For this program you must be at least 18 years of age and provide a police record as you will be in contact with children. You will need to be in generally good health and have some sort of medical experience. This does not mean you need to have a degree in medicine. There is no time restriction on this program.

Volunteer Feedback: I loved the disabled center. the people were welcoming and hospitable and made me feel welcome. The kids were challenging and rewarding to work for and I felt I mae an impact. I was sad to leave and to only be there a short time. Laxmi was a wonderful teacher and I appreciated that she asked for suggestions and tried to involve me. Sabina, USA

Conservation

This program is for anyone who wants to help clean up our environment. Nepal has some of the most amazing country in the world. Unfortunately, they are not provided with the education we are and they are not provided with garbage cans. During this program you will help by cleaning up local ponds where animals drink from and other areas which are covered in litter and are ruining the beautiful landscape.

This program is great to mix with the Orphanage, English Teaching or Building programs. You will be setting a great example for the local people during this program and you will see amazing results which will make you feel great! You will stay with a local host family lose to your work site. However, you may have to take a short bus ride depending on where the project is.

For this program there is no age restriction. Anyone under the age of 18 must have parental consent. You will need to be in fairly good health as you will be doing physical work. You will need to provide a police record. There is no time restriction on this program.

Building

This program is constantly changing. You may be involved in doing a number of different things. You may be helping to repair a home or a school to make it safer for the children or helping to build a playground or simply painting or gardening to make things look nicer.

If you have special skills that you feel would be best put to use in a certain way please feel free to let us know ahead of time so we can have a look at what our upcoming projects will be. If you have specific idea’s for this program, please let us know what they are and we will see if it is possible. We think it’s great when volunteers take initiative to start up new projects!

There is no age restriction for this program but anyone under the age of 18 must have parental consent. You must provide a police record. You may not be working directly with children but you may be working close to them if you are, for example, fixing up a school. You also need to be in generally good health with no major problems. There is no time restriction on this program.

Volunteer Feedback: First off I would like to say that volunteering is very cool. It was my first time ever volunteering and global traveling. It was the most fun and exciting time I have ever had. I chose AVA as they were priced right and only sponsored in Nepal so if there was any trouble I could get 100% help getting out of it. The group that will pick you up at the airport are quite caring and mindful of the fact that you are new. Help would have been a call away as all the NEVHO group have cell phones. My time volunteering was worth more than the little amount (of money) spent. Jim, Canada

Culture Exchange

This program is for anyone who is just looking to really experience an exciting new culture. You will be placed with a host family in a small community just outside of Kathmandu. You will be given breakfast and dinner and will eat with the family you are staying with.

If you choose to take part in our training program, you will be given 15 hours of language training and you will be taught about some important cultural differences to get you off to a good start. You will be given the chance to interact with local people which gives you the opportunity to learn about their culture and to teach them about yours. This can be an extremely rewarding experience you won’t soon forget.

There is no age restriction on this program but if you are under the age of 18 we will need parental consent. You will also need to provide a police record upon arrival in Nepal. There is no time restriction on this program.
