Nirmala's story. How the gift of a goat changed her life.
Nirmala lives among the majestic Himalayan Mountains in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. She stands proudly beside her son with a worn red pashmina wrapped around her shoulders for warmth and a small red bindi just above her nose to signify she is a married woman. You can see the one room shack where Nirmala lives with her husband and two sons in the distance.
Nirmala and her husband have struggled to feed their boys and send them to school since they became parents, but she begins to smile as she tells us how her life was changed the day AVA gave her a goat. Nirmala would wrap an old rope around the goats neck several times a day like a leash and take it out to graze in the hills. At night she brings the goat into the house where it sleeps in the same room as her family on a bed of straw to ensure its safety from wild animals. When the goat was old enough, she bred it. Nirmala patiently waited until it has a baby. Her family took great care of the two goats and soon she bred the goat again this time giving birth to two more kids. Nirmala kept her promise to us and gave one of the kids to another needy family in her small village to pay it forward. She sold the other two baby goats. With that money Nirmala was able to send both of her boys to private school for the first time where they will receive a superior education ensuring a brighter future. The gift of one goat changed this family’s life forever. Tears swelled in her eyes and she squeezed her son’s hand as she thanked us.
